Kicking off the year: Travel Plans (and Budget Realties)
It's the beginning of the year, and I just got my vacation days approved. Naturally, I jumped straight into planning, and browsing flights, accommodations, and activities. But wow...everything is ridiculously expensive. Every booking feels like a mini heart attack, and my budget is disappearing faster than I would like. But let's be real: not all of us can afford those picture-perfect getaways we see on social media. Flights, fancy hotels, and touristy spots add up quickly, making trips to places like Santorini, Amsterdam, or Paris feel more like a distant dream than a real plan. Yet, with every scroll through Instagram or TikTok, we're bombarded with images of these hotspots, making us feel like we are missing out.
But, travelling is Love and that got me thinking -what if I need a backup plan? A list of budget-friendly destinations for those times when funds are tight but the travel bug won't let go. So, I did the research, and honestly? I got so excited that some of my original plans might have to take a backseat. There are plenty of underrated travel destinations that are just as stunning, way less crowded and best of all-budget-friendly. Visiting lesser-known spots means you get a more authentic experience -no long lines,over-priced souvenirs, or swarms of tourists photobombing your perfect shot. So, why not start your adventure with these underrated travel destinations? You might just discover your new favourite place before the rest of the world catches on.
I have put together this list after researching the underrated travel spots, and trust me, it's just the beginning. There are so many hidden gems out there that deserve the spotlight, and I'll keep adding to this never-ending list as I find more. I haven't been to these places (yet), but just reading about them made me rethink my entire travel list. But for now, let's start with these amazing destinations- you might just find your next adventure. Here is what I found.
1. Kyrgyzstan: The Majestic Mountain Wonderland
If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure with jaw-dropping landscapes, rich nomadic culture, and affordability, Kyrgyzstan, a hidden gem in Central Asia, should be at the top of your travel destinations list. This country is overlooked, but that's exactly what makes it so special. Known for its dramatic landscapes, this nation is a paradise for nature enthusiasts, with towering mountains, pristine lakes, and vast valleys that can be explored without the burden of high costs.
If you ever wanted to step back in time and live like a true nomad, Kyrgyzstan is one of the few places left where you can do so. The Kyrgyz people have a deep-rooted nomadic culture and love sharing it. You can stay in "Yurts"(a circular tent), watch eagle hunters in action, try local dishes like "Beshbarmak" and even join in on traditional horse games like "Kok-Boru'(imagine rugby but on horseback). Stunning nature without the tourists Kyrgyzstan is 90% mountains, meaning the breathtaking scenery is everywhere.
And, the most important reason, it's incredibly affordable. Unlike European or North American travel destinations, Kyrgyzstan is shockingly budget-friendly. Here is what you can expect to spend:
Accommodation: You can expect to spend US $10-$30 per night if you stay in yurts, guesthouses, or budget hotels.
Food: It may cost you US $3 -$10 per meal at local restaurants and street food.
Transportation: USD$5-$20 for long-distance shared taxis or marshrutkas(minibuses).
Activities and Tours: US $20 -$100 for guided hikes, horseback riding, or yurt experiences. So,

When to go?
Summer(June -September): Best for trekking, yurt stays, and lake adventures.
Winter (December -March): Great for skiing and snow activities (Yes, Kyrgyzstan has amazing ski resorts!).

If you are still adamant about fulfilling your European dream but can't go to France or Spain, Portugal should be at the top of your list. 3. Sri Lanka: A Paradise No One Talks About
Now let's talk about this destination that is criminally underrated and deserves a spot on your travel list. On the map, it looks like a teardrop-shaped island just off the southeastern coast of India. It is a country with diverse landscapes, rich history, and a vibrant culture. It's a true paradise with everything for everyone, with stunning beaches, lush jungles, and a vibrant culture that seems to be lost in the buzz of mainstream travel destinations. It gets overshadowed by its more tourist-heavy neighbours like India, Nepal etc.
A beach lover's dream, with incredible wildlife, and mouthwatering cuisine, this island nation offers experiences that are both affordable and unforgettable. You can explore ancient temples, lounge on gorgeous shorelines, or hike through breathtaking tea plantations—all without shrinking your pockets. The warmth of the locals and the diversity of landscapes make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking adventure or relaxation. So why isn't Sri Lanka on everyone's travel list? Perhaps it's time for travellers to discover this hidden treasure before it becomes the next big thing!
Here is a rough breakdown of the expenses to help you plan :
Accommodation- Budget guesthouses and hostels range from US $10 to $ 20.The midrange comfortable hotels or private rooms can cost between US $25 to $50 per night and Luxury high-end hotels and resorts start around $145.
Food - Local snacks and street food are as low as US $2. Casual dining at a local restaurant can cost you about $5 to $10 per meal and for fine dining and more upscale experience, expect to pay $20 to $30 per meal.
Transportation is extremely affordable as local bus tickets cost around $2 to 5 per week. Taxis and Tuk-Tuks are more convenient and reasonably priced as well.

4. Madagascar: A Wild Escape
If you are done with fancy cities and want to explore nature and wildlife while being a miser, Madagascar is your go-to-wild escape. This African travel destination offers a little bit of everything -stunning beaches, rugged landscapes and most importantly the wildlife that's found nowhere else on earth (hello, Lemurs!). You can roam through rainforests, and trek to hidden waterfalls -all without emptying your wallet.
The first thing I would do is head to the Andasibe National Park to catch glimpses of the famous lemurs(google them) in their natural habitat. It's one of the best places to dive into Madagascar's wild side. The Avenue of the Baobabs is a must-see for those iconic photos. I googled it and those huge, ancient trees are like something out of a dream. And, the beaches look out of the world where you can dive, snorkel or just relax in the sun on a budget.
Here is the cost breakdown for you:
Accommodation: Budget guesthouses run between US $10-$25 per night, and you will find plenty of simple, clean stays.
Food: Local meals are incredibly affordable, usually around $2-$5 for street food and small local restaurants.
Transportation: As per my research, travel between the cities can be relatively slow but it is cheap at the same time. Expect $5 to $15 for bus rides between towns. Renting a car would not be a bad option if you are a good driver and you do not mind bumpy rides.
Activities and Tours: National park entry fees and guided tours usually cost $10-$30 depending on the location and tour type. Guides typically charge $15 -$25 per day which can be split with a group.
A Week-long trip may cost around US $1500 to $2000 (Including budget flights with layovers) and a basic lifestyle when you are on the island. You can cut costs further if you do the bookings well in advance or you can opt for a shorter trip to save on both flights and accommodations.
When to Go?
April to October- The best time to visit Madagascar is during this dry season. This is when the weather is most favourable for hiking, wildlife watching, and beach days. Plus, it's when you will spot the most animals, as they are more active during this period.
November to March (not recommended) - This is the rainy season and it can make travel trickier and certain areas less accessible due to flooding.
5. Nicaragua: A Hidden Gem That Beats Mexico
When travellers think about Central America, Mexico often steals the spotlight. Nicaragua doesn't get its due attention and it is often overlooked. I am sure a few of you haven't even heard the name of this country. But, Nicaragua truly outshines Mexico in many ways. One of my coworkers just returned from a 2 weeks trip from Nicaragua and she made me add this country to my list.
The best thing about Nicaragua is less commercialized, unlike Mexico's tourist-heavy resorts. Nicaragua's local culture remains intact and that makes it a great travel destination for immersive experiences. As it is a less-discovered country(yet), it offers a more authentic and tranquil experience as compared to Mexcio's packed hotspots. Accommodation, food, and activities in Nicaragua are significantly cheaper than in Mexico. You can enjoy a full day of adventure for the price of a meal at a resort in Cancun.
Nicaragua has a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. With its stunning natural landscapes, from volcanic mountains to secluded beaches, this country is a complete package. The vibrant culture, friendly locals, and rich history add to its charm. In Nicaragua, every traveller feels like home and that is the USP of this place. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in nature and culture, all while enjoying the warm hospitality that's hard to find elsewhere. So why wait?
Let's have a look at the cost breakdown :
Accommodation: Expect to spend US $10-$30 per person, per night for budget hostels to mid-range hotels.
Food: Again, very affordable cost of $5 to $15 for locals vs. mid-range restaurants.
Transportation: US $1 to $10 for local buses vs. taxis/private shuttles.
Activities and Tours: $5 -$20 per person, per activity including hiking, volcano boarding and island tours.
A week-long trip may cost you US $1000 to $1500 including flights if you are ok with long-haul flights.
When to Go?
November to April - Perfect time for beach lovers and outdoor explorers.
May to October - It is still a good time if you don't mind the occasional rain-and it comes with even cheaper prices.
