The AI war is getting crowded.
When I wrote my previous article comparing ChatGPT and DeepSeek, the AI race already felt like a battle between some serious competitors. ChatGPT had changed the way we thought about AI, and DeepSeek had entered the scene ready to challenge it.
But that was a while ago.
AI has moved incredibly fast since then. What started as simple chatbots that could answer questions has turned into something much bigger. AI can now help with writing, research, coding, planning, analysing documents, creating images, organising information and even completing tasks across different apps.
And sitting right in the middle of this competition are three names that are hard to ignore: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
ChatGPT has become the AI assistant most people already know. Claude has built a reputation for handling writing, reasoning and more complicated tasks. And Gemini has the advantage of being connected to Google's massive ecosystem.
So, which one is actually better?
Instead of simply looking at what each company says about its AI, I thought I would break them down the same way I did with my ChatGPT vs DeepSeek comparison.
Seven, eight, maybe nine rounds later, we might have an answer.
ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini.
Let the AI battle begin.
Round 1: Accuracy and Information
Let's start with probably the most important thing.
What good is an AI assistant if you can't trust the information it gives you?
We've all seen AI confidently give an answer that sounds completely believable, only to discover later that something was wrong. And , this is one of the biggest things people need to remember when using AI.
ChatGPT has become much better at handling information, especially when it can use web search and other tools. But that doesn't mean every answer should automatically be treated as fact. If I'm asking about something important, I still want to verify the information.
Claude also does a good job of explaining information clearly. One thing I like about Claude is that it often takes the time to explain why it reached a particular conclusion instead of simply throwing an answer at you.
Then there's Gemini.
This is where Google's search and information ecosystem becomes interesting. Gemini is designed to work closely with Google's broader services, which gives it a natural advantage when it comes to information that changes quickly.
But the thing is none of these three should get a free pass.
AI can sound extremely confident while being completely wrong. Whether it's ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, you still need to use your own judgment.
Winner: Tie β All three can provide useful information, but none should replace fact-checking when accuracy really matters.
Round 2: Conversational Flow
This is where things get a little more personal.
If you're going to spend hours talking to an AI, you don't want it to feel like you're filling out a government form.
ChatGPT has always been good at keeping conversations flowing. You can change the subject, make a joke, ask a follow-up question and then suddenly return to something you mentioned twenty messages ago.
It also adapts well to different tones. You can ask for something professional, casual, funny, serious or brutally honest.
Claude has a slightly different personality.
Its responses often feel thoughtful and deliberate. It can be particularly good when you want to have a longer conversation about an idea or give it a messy collection of thoughts and ask it to make sense of everything.
Gemini can also hold natural conversations, but for me, the interesting part is how quickly the three are starting to overlap. The differences aren't as obvious as they once were.
All three can understand context.
All three can have a conversation.
All three can occasionally misunderstand you. Basically, they're becoming a lot like humans. π
Winner: ChatGPT β It still feels like the most natural all-purpose conversational experience to me.
Round 3: Creativity and Writing Style
Now we're getting into my territory.
I could easily ask AI to write entire blogs for me. In fact, it would probably save me a lot of time. But the things is you would know the difference. It might be grammatically perfect, beautifully structured and full of impressive words, but something would be missing. My voice. My silly humor. Those little thoughts and observations that make a piece of writing feel human.
And that's where things get interesting.
ChatGPT is great for brainstorming, storytelling and turning ideas into something more structured. But sometimes, it has a habit of making everything sound a little too perfect. You ask for something natural, and suddenly you're reading what sounds like a company announcement.
Claude, on the other hand, has a way of handling more nuanced writing. It can take complicated ideas and make them flow naturally, without making every sentence sound like it belongs in a business presentation.
Gemini is also capable of creative writing and brainstorming. It can produce some interesting ideas, but getting the right tone and personality is still a different challenge.
At the end of the day, AI can help put words together, but it doesn't automatically give those words a personality. And , nobody wants to read a blog that sounds like it was written by a very polite robot who has never had a bad day or made a terrible joke.
Winner: ChatGPT β for its versatility in creative writing and brainstorming. But when it comes to sounding genuinely human, the real challenge is getting any AI to leave a little room for personality..
Round 4: Reasoning and Problem Solving
This is where the AI competition gets much more interesting. AI isn't just being asked to answer questions anymore. We're asking it to think through problems.
Plan a trip. Compare options. Analyze a document. Look at a complicated situation. Find a solution.
And sometimes, we're basically giving it our entire brain dump and saying, "Okay, what do I do with this?" π
Claude has developed a strong reputation in this area. It can be particularly useful when you give it a complicated problem with several competing factors and ask it to work through the situation.
ChatGPT is also very strong here, especially when you want the answer broken down into steps and turned into something practical.
Gemini brings its own strengths, particularly when the task involves information and services within Google's ecosystem.
The interesting part is that there isn't a huge gap anymore. We're no longer talking about one AI being able to reason while another simply spits out sentences.
All three are capable of handling complicated problems.
The difference is often in how they approach the problem.
Winner: Claude β When the task requires deeper reasoning, weighing different factors and making sense of messy information, Claude has a noticeable strength.
Round 5: Research and Current Information
This is another area where things have changed dramatically. The old version of AI was basically:
"Here's everything I know up until my training data."
The newer version is increasingly:
"Let me go find out."
That is a pretty big difference.
ChatGPT can search the web, gather information and work through research tasks. It can also combine research with writing, analysis and other tools.
Gemini has a natural advantage here because of Google's huge information ecosystem. If you're already using Google Search, Gmail, Drive, Docs and other Google services, having an AI that fits into that environment can be extremely useful.
Claude is also capable of research and working through large amounts of information, particularly when you're dealing with documents or complicated material.
But this round isn't just about how much information an AI can find. It's about what it does with that information.
Can it separate useful information from nonsense? Can it explain where something came from? Can it identify conflicting information? Can it tell me when it isn't sure?
That's what matters.
Winner: Gemini β Its connection to Google's information ecosystem gives it a natural advantage when research and current information are the main priority.
Round 6: User Experience and Ease of Use
This might sound like a boring category.
It isn't.
You could have the smartest AI in the world, but if using it feels like operating a nuclear reactor, people aren't going to use it every day. π
ChatGPT has a very polished and familiar interface. For many people, opening ChatGPT and starting a conversation is second nature at this point.
Claude keeps things relatively simple too. There's not a huge learning curve, and you can get straight into the conversation without needing to understand a dozen settings.
Gemini is also straightforward, especially if you're already living inside Google's ecosystem.
And that's probably the key difference.
If you already use Google products heavily, Gemini can feel like a natural extension of what you're already doing.
If you're looking for a general-purpose AI assistant that you can open and throw almost anything at, ChatGPT still feels incredibly accessible.
Winner: ChatGPT β Simple, familiar and easy to use for almost anyone.
Round 7: Customization and Adaptability
This is where AI is starting to become less like a search box and more like a personal assistant. The more you use an AI, the more useful it becomes when it understands how you like things done.
Maybe you want short answers. Maybe you want detailed explanations. Maybe you always want British spelling. Maybe you hate bullet points. Maybe you want your emails to sound professional .
ChatGPT has invested heavily in personalization, memory and connected tools. That makes it possible to create a much more tailored experience.
Claude also adapts well to instructions and tone, particularly when you're working on a specific project or giving it a lot of context.
Gemini's strength is slightly different. If you're already using Google's ecosystem, the ability to connect AI with the tools and information you already use can make it feel more useful in everyday life.
So this one really depends on what you want from your AI.
Winner: ChatGPT β Its combination of personalization, memory and flexibility makes it the most adaptable all-purpose assistant for me.
Round 8: Cost and Accessibility
And now we arrive at the question everyone eventually asks.
How much is this going to cost me?
Because we don't want three AI subscriptions sitting on our credit cards every month.
All three companies offer ways to use their AI without immediately paying for a premium subscription, although free access comes with different limits and features. Paid plans can unlock more advanced models, higher usage limits and additional tools.
This is where things can get confusing because AI companies are constantly changing their plans, models and limits.
Something that's included today might be restricted tomorrow. So instead of pretending that one company will always be cheaper, I'd look at what you actually need.
If you're a casual user who asks questions, writes the occasional email and wants help brainstorming, a free plan might be enough.
If you're using AI every day for work, writing, research or complicated projects, the paid plans start making more sense.
And if you're thinking about subscribing to all three...
Please don't.
Your credit card has feelings too. π
Winner: Tie β All three have free access options, while the value of their paid plans depends heavily on how you actually use AI.
Round 9: The Real-World Test
This is probably the round I was most interested in. Because benchmarks are great. Numbers are great. Fancy charts are great. But what happens when a normal person sits down and actually uses these things?
Give ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the exact same question.
Ask all three to write an email. Ask all three to plan a vacation. Ask all three to explain something complicated.
Give them a messy paragraph and ask them to rewrite it.
I tried giving them ten blog ideas. Then asked them to improve those ideas. And finally, give them something slightly ridiculous.
ChatGPT often feels like the best general-purpose option. You can throw almost anything at it and get something useful back.
Claude shines when the task requires more thoughtful analysis, nuanced writing or working through a complicated set of information.
Gemini becomes particularly interesting when the task involves Google's ecosystem or information that benefits from its connection to Google's services.
And that's probably the biggest lesson from this comparison.
You don't necessarily need one AI that does absolutely everything.
You need an AI that does the things you actually do well.
Winner: Depends on the task.
And, I think that's the most accurate answer.
Final Verdict: Who Wins?
So, after putting ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini through the same battle, who takes the crown?
Well...
It's complicated.
ChatGPT remains the all-rounder. It's conversational, flexible, easy to use and capable of handling everything from writing and brainstorming to research, planning and problem solving.
Claude is the one I would look at when the task requires deeper reasoning, thoughtful writing or dealing with a complicated pile of information.
Gemini is the interesting choice for people who already live inside Google's ecosystem and want AI to work more closely with the tools they already use.
And that's something I didn't fully appreciate when I wrote my ChatGPT vs DeepSeek article.
Back then, the question felt more like:
"Which AI is better?"
Now I think the better question is:
"Which AI is better for me?"
Because the AI race has changed.
We're no longer choosing between an AI that can do something and one that can't.
We're choosing between several AI assistants that can all do a lot of the same things, but approach them differently.
And that's actually a good thing.
Competition is forcing these companies to keep improving. New models are arriving, features are changing and AI is slowly becoming less of a novelty and more of a tool that people use every day.
Personally, I don't think you need to pick one AI and swear allegiance to it.
Use ChatGPT when it makes sense.
Try Claude when you need something different.
Give Gemini a shot if you live in Google's world.
And if another AI shows up next month claiming it's going to destroy all three...
Well, I guess I'll have to write another article. π
For now, the AI war isn't over. It's probably just getting started. Maybe the real winner isn't ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Maybe it's the person who knows how to use all of them.
And if you're still asking AI to write your grocery list...
You're probably missing out.
