A Fresh Start
Alright! Yet another new year approaches, it brings with it the promise of a fresh start, yet another blank canvas to paint new dreams and aspirations. Though many of our plans from the previous year may have fallen short, we are granted another opportunity to aim high and redefine our paths. Most of us are reflecting on the past 12 months and planning the changes we wish to implement in our lives. I'm not sure about you, but I totally felt a different vibe this year. I felt a shift from the traditional ways of living life. Something has changed for sure. People around us are beginning to question and break away from conventional habits. People are starting to embrace change and daring to take risks.
If you did not reach the goal of having a certain amount of savings that's OK. If you got rejected again for the position you wanted- so what? You couldn't go travelling as you thought- plan next year. This is the beauty of the New Year. Technically, it's just a date but we use this date as a psychological restart button. But the question looms: is this the year you choose to step out of your comfort zone? If not now, then when? Is it time to make those tough decisions and take those bold calls? Embrace the unknown and let this year be one of bold decisions and newfound adventures.
A Minimalist Reset
If you were even an average student in high school, you would remember that they taught us Simplification in Mathematics. I had this recent realization that it wasn't for the purpose of finding a better job or making a successful career. Even if it was, we could not make the best use of it. But now we surely can, by applying Simplification to our lives.
As we approach 2025, consider what areas of life we wish to simplify. All of us have our own different agendas and problems. To start the journey toward simplification, it is important to recognize that minimalism is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It may be enhancing your daily routines, refining your commitments, or nurturing relationships that fill you with joy. The first step is to recognize what is in your hand that can be fixed. Each person's interpretation may differ, yet the core principle remains the same: to create a life that reflects our values and aspirations. Once we contemplate these aspects, we can start the purposeful journey tailored to our unique aspirations. It's all about being conscious and aware of our values. Once we have that clarity and we actively engage in this simplification, we can create an intentional lifestyle that enhances our peace and fulfillment.
You would agree that most of us are overwhelmed by our routines. We waste time on some useless things and then we complain about not having time for ourselves. Life simplification is going to assist us in alleviating that overwhelm. Once we identify and consciously choose to limit the elements that contribute to our stress, we set the tone for personal growth and satisfaction. As we are already thinking about New Year resolutions, I believe it worthwhile to give a shot to the simplification technique taught by your Mathematics teacher in grade 7.
Simplifying Your Life: Strategies for a More Intentional Growth
When you are on a long road trip, you set some checkpoints where you stop to refill fuel, check the pressure in your tires, and make sure your vehicle is intact to continue the journey. That's how I take the New Year, just as a checkpoint for us. We have a few days before we reach this checkpoint to identify and acknowledge what needs to be fixed. Our life demands a conscious examination of various aspects of existence. Some facets like mental health mindset, physical well-being, relationships, personal growth, and hobbies. I am happy to share what I have planned for the New Year.
Journaling - To fix a problem, you need to identify it. New Year's Eve is the best time for some self-reflection. A habit of regular reflection can have profound effects on your intentional growth journey. One effective method for self-reflection is Journaling. For intentional growth, you must understand yourself before you understand other people. Doesn't matter if you don't have anyone to share your thoughts with. If you articulate your thoughts and feelings to yourself, you can observe patterns emerging over time. Set aside time weekly to assess your activities and commitments, ensuring that they align with your evolving goals. You would easily highlight the areas where change is desirable.
Decluttering - Do you feel any need to keep your lives cluttered? We tend to hoard unnecessary things, clothes, memories, and some relationships. It's high time to start decluttering. The cluttered environment not only reduces productivity but also heightens stress levels. It's time to start assessing your belongings and removing items that no longer serve a purpose. It could be people too. Make your choices smartly. Organize your workspace and living areas, you create a tranquil atmosphere that keeps your mind positive and focused and enhances creativity.
Evaluating social connections and relationships - Some people just drain your energy and give you negativity in return. The new year is the time to recognize those connections and say goodbye. It is high time to assess the depth and the quality of all the connections. Some people follow you on Instagram just because they are curious about your life. They don't really care if you are well or not. Ask yourself if you need those connections. If not, protect your energy and do some cleansing. Strong relationships will add value to your intentional growth with thoughts, ideas, or even a positive presence. Engaging with supportive friends and family can provide emotional sustenance while establishing clear boundaries prevents overwhelm and stress.
Minimize Commitments - We often succumb to peer pressure and commit to something we do not want to do. This has to end in the New Year 2025. Evaluate your current responsibilities and prioritize them based on alignment with your personal goals. Avoid committing if something doesn't align with your choices and priorities. Trust me, learning to say no can be very liberating. You would be able to dedicate time and energy to activities that truly resonate with your values. Try doing it and you will feel a sense of freedom. You will create room for meaningful engagements rather than obligatory ones essential for adopting a more intentional existence.
Mental Health Mindset- If your mental outlook is healthy, you can head on a deal with any obstacle. If not, every aspect of life may feel overwhelming. Your mental health should be a priority in the New Year,2025. It is even more important than taking a gym membership that you will most likely waste. If you want to adopt a simpler and less chaotic lifestyle, resort to techniques like mindfulness, meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, and, my favorite, manifestation.
Physical Well-Being - This one shouldn't be so below on the list. But it is something we try to add to our list every year. Focusing on fitness, nutrition, and self-care contributes to maintaining a balanced existence, we all are well aware. However, I am going to add adequate sleep, hydration, and mindful eating to the list. This is what we actually need these days. I personally believe that people who get a sound 8-hour deep sleep and are not constipated can deal with any problem in life. Of course, doing regular physical activity, whether through structured exercise or simply taking walks, not only enhances physical health but also elevates mood. Nutrition should not be overlooked; nourishing the body with a balanced diet filled with whole foods can lead to improved energy levels and mental clarity.
Learn a new skill or develop a hobby -The years are passing quickly. We will be in December 2025 in the blink of an eye. If you do not want to curse yourself for wasting another year without adding anything new to your skills, it's time to make a plan now. Whether it be learning a new skill, exploring artistic endeavors, or participating in community-based activities, dedicating time to these pursuits will give you life experiences and aid in personal development, Learning a new skill that sparks joy inside you, will add satisfaction to your life. Feel free to join me if you want to learn the Korean language in the new year.
Mindful Consumption - Actually, I already implemented this strategy to some extent. I had this realization since I started travelling again. I love travelling and it is not cheap out there. Now every penny I spend is spent with a thought "What can I do better with this amount on my next trip". I have managed to save some amount good enough to buy a couple of nights in a nice hotel on my next trip.
This approach helps in a conscious evaluation of our purchasing habits. We realize the implications of consumerism in our lives. It promotes intentionality and encourages us to think critically about the products we buy and the reasons behind those choices. So, in this new year consume mindfully and assess whether your purchases truly serve a purpose or simply contribute to an overwhelming accumulation of possessions.
How to Make Changes Stick
We change our lives every year but New Year resolution balloons fizzle out. Making life changes is not hard but sticking with them is. So, how can we make changes stick? The first step is to be true to ourselves and set realistic and attainable goals. When the new year comes we get so excited that we overwhelm ourselves with numerous changes. I have decided to focus on one or two areas at a time. I found this interesting acronym to make the changes stick. So, the change you want to make should be SMART. S-specific, M -M-measurable, A- achievable, R- relevant, and T- time-bound. The SMART technique will make it more manageable and doable.
We are so hardened by our bad habits that our muscle memory brings us back to the old habits. We require constant reminders. We can add visual cues like sticky notes on the fridge, phone reminders, etc. One other way is to mix your new habit with an existing one. This will make adjustments feel less strange. For instance, if the goal is to meditate regularly, pairing it with a morning coffee routine can create a natural flow and help to solidify the new habit.
Nonetheless, when we start holding ourselves accountable, the changes become habitual. However, If you have a partner then you will be reminded of your bad habits without any self-reflection. Jokes apart, whether it involves intentions with a friend or participating in a support group, having someone to check in with can maintain motivation and commitment. Regular discussions about progress and obstacles can build a strong sense of responsibility towards personal goals.
Final Thoughts: What 2025 Can Be
We stand on the threshold of a new year and a lot is happening in the world right now. We have to pace up to catch up with all the new opportunities. The potential that 2025 holds invites us to reflect on what we actually want in life. There are tons of copybook parameters of success set by society. Get a 9 to 5 job, buy a house, save money, retire after 60, and then travel the world. This is a copybook picture imposed on us by the society. But in the New Year 2025, we must reflect deeply on our aspirations and desires for a more meaningful existence.
However, I am not saying that in 2025 your life will change drastically which might be possible too. But what I am trying to convey is that it is time to start the process. Nothing would change overnight. Time to start this journey and an essential component of this journey is the understanding that change is a gradual process. Recognizing that transformation doesn't happen overnight liberates us from the pressures of unrealistic expectations. Instead, it enhances our ability to appreciate the small steps we take toward a simpler life. Every action, no matter how minor it may seem, contributes significantly to our overall progress. Instead of seeking drastic and immediate alterations, we can prioritize gentle adjustments that promote well-being and satisfaction. So, let's use this checkpoint of 2025 to make meaningful changes and allow each small step to move toward the simpler, more fulfilling life we actually want. Happy Holidays.
